On Sunday morning, February 15, 2015, the FAA released a proposed set of rules for small unmanned vehicles (UAV). The original documents can be found here: FAA sUAS Proposed Part 107

The two big ones:

  1. You will not need a private pilot license.
  2. Must maintain line of sight (LOS) – Sorry Amazon, no deliveries via drone

Brief Summary of the proposed rules:

  • Apply to aircraft under 55lbs
  • Daylight only
  • Max speed of 100mph
  • Max altitude of 500 ft
  • Must obtain knowledge certification
  • Additional proposal for MicroUAS (under 2 kg) to come
  • May not operate over anyone not directly involved in the operation
